Yup, that’s the question, alright: what the heck have I gotten myself into?
I went to my first class of Intro to Medieval Lit yesterday. It was actually the second day of the class, but I didn’t register in time to go to the first class. So I was already not with the program, starting out from behind. I always hate that. But sometimes it’s just the way it is…
It’s been a REALLY LONG TIME since I was in an advanced level literature class. Decades, in fact. And during that time things have gotten incredibly more complex, slangy, theoretical, and of course, tech-dependent. I was at a loss, especially since I hadn’t known or done the assignment (several books of the Aeneid, by Virgil, or Vergil as my prof prefers). And I HATE being at a loss, especially in things academic or intellectual. [See Volunteering: What’s Up with That?]
And, although auditors typically don’t have to do papers, projects, presentations or exams, the prof, who is very engaging, asked me to do a ten-minute presentation in class of “supplementary primary and secondary sources” on a topic that would increase the class’s knowledge of the “literary-historical” dimensions of the works we will be reading. OMG!!!
But, on the bright side, I now have my student ID’s for both MTSO, the seminary, and Ohio State:
And I got my parking permit, too. AND I ordered my books for Medieval Lit, which are coming tomorrow (thank you, Amazon Prime). All in one day!
To celebrate, here’s a track I like a lot from Katy Perry, with Kanye West. You simply MUST see this gorgeous other-worldly video:
Wow! I’d be disconcerted if I fronted up to an Intro to Medieval Lit course and found I was expected to be au fait with Vergil. We read some of the Aeneid in Latin at high school many, many, years ago, but I can’t remember much of it! And he’s not someone who springs to mind when I think of medieval literature, but now I see the connections. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your course.

Disconcerted is putting it mildly. I read the Aeneid some years ago just for fun, but doing it in an advance class is another thing entirely! I’ll keep you updated. Meanwhile I’m going to go read some fluffy novel. 🙂

You’re a better woman than I.
I did sign up for an online course in digital storytelling, after you wrote about all the resources out there. So thanks for that!

Oh, that is cool! I think you are a natural storyteller, so who knows the powerhouse you’ll become once fully trained digitally. 🙂
