The Aeneid
The Aeneid by Virgil

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Literally a classic, The Aeneid is the book our Intro to Medieval Lit class started with this August. Not that the Middle Ages began in 29 B.C., when Virgil wrote this master work, but rather that it, and several other Classical works that we have been reading, are foundational to studyiing the works of the Medieval period.

I had read the Aeneid before, for pleasure, but giving it a close reading and examining its historical and cultural contexts made it into an entirely new book for me.

Still, Book IV, “The Passion of the Queen,” is my favorite. As is the song “Dido’s Lament,” a staple for sopranos doing early music. I love it!
