Marvellous photos. I’ve never been to China, but my mother visited in the late 1980s and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I’d say so! And a standard air-route. Many long haul flights to Europe go via Hong Kong, Shanghai, or Beijing. About the same flight time from here as to Los Angeles.
