I needed a haircut even before lockdown started in mid-March here in Ohio, USA.
Given the passage of time since then, my hair has been really looking shaggy and shapeless.
I forgot to take a Before picture, but believe me, it looked bad. π
I’ve cut my own hair off and on since that first momentous nighttime shearing of my long curls when I was 12. When I woke up the next morning, I was horrified at what I’d done. My wails of sadness drove my father out of the house.
Still, I’ve continued to cut my own hair, as well as other people’s, for a long time.
That does not mean I am in any way a professional stylist. But there have been some particularly good haircuts I’ve given myself throughout the years. Here is one of them, from 2016:

Actually, though, I’d been planning to get a professional cut when suddenly the lockdown occurred, closing all the salons.
I have waited and waited. Hair salons will be opening in Ohio on May 15th, just two days from now.
But I’m still in a self-isolating category indefinitely, due to my age and some health conditions. It wouldn’t be a good idea for me to go to a salon anytime soon.
So today I took my scissors to my hair again.
At least I do have professional scissors, which are called shears. Mine are small, 5.5 inches, for better control. They have stainless steel blades from Germany. I got them at a wholesale beauty supplies store.

Since I’m not a professional, it takes two or three days for me to achieve the haircut I want. The photo at the top shows the results of Day One.
I will let things “settle” for a day before I fix some obvious errors. With my naturally curly hair, it can take awhile for the curl to reassert itself. My hair definitely has a mind of its own! π
I don’t want to go too quickly with the haircut and end up with a shorter cut than I had intended. Although I do like the 2016 haircut, my face is different now, and I don’t think I would look good now with that short of a cut.
Stay tuned for further developments! π
You’re very talented. I cut my hair also – yep, just set the blades as low as they will go and have at it. It’s called a buzz cutπ

Your hair looks good. I cut my own hair for the first time a month or so ago. Before lockdown I had very long hair, now it’s quite short. I also have naturally curly hair which seems to cover up the fact that it’s a terrible cut. Last week I trimmed it and it’s now shorter than I would like, but it will grow again. By the time I’m allowed to meet my family and friends again, I’m sure I’ll have got the hang of it.

Thanks, April. Yes, it is the blessing of curly hair that it can hide bad haircuts. I decided this morning that my cut was too short, too, so I’m going to leave it alone for awhile. I’m sure you will look great when you meet your friends and family again. π

Such courage! And interesting. I’m amused to notice that in my Bad Drawings, the me-ish figure’s hair gets longer and madder day by day.

I do so much enjoy your drawings, Rachel! π And to have the you-figure’s hair get longer and more unruly each day is so very realistic, if my own was any example!

Thank you very much, Timi! Yes, I could furnish several birds’ nests already π

Yet another good reason to go outside for long walks! Make sure to run your hands through your hair while walking, to disperse some strands for birds building nests. π

I’ve read other posts about you cutting your own hair, and seen the photographed results!. You’re evidently a brilliant stylist, Timi, and if you live over here, I’d be your most regular customer. I’ve cut my own hair many times, too, simply because hairdressers seem to become deaf when I explain what I want doing. Not once have I come out of a salon feeling I’ve got the ‘look’ I wanted. My husband says I’m just too awkward to please and he’s probably right. So, I keep the same old bob I’ve had for most of the past 55 years. How stylish is that..? Haha. I loved your pixie cut of a few years ago. I remember being tempted to go pixie myself. I think I’m a little too old now, so I’ll stick with the bob. β€

Thanks, Millie! π I have enjoyed cutting my hair in the past, but now with the severe arthritis in my hands and fingers, it is a painful chore, which was why I was thinking of going to a salon. But like you, I have rarely gotten a haircut from a hairdresser that I actually liked. And having to pay for such an injury was indeed an insult! π

Congratulations–I am so impressed with anyone who can cut his/her own hair! I am forced to trim my husband’s, but then he is mostly bald so it’s not bad. My hair looks a shaggy mess these days. Said husband made a joke about looking like an aging hippie with wrinkles. He’s lucky I was in a good mood at that moment. π
